Die Strandloper Ultimate Fish Braai on the Beach
Die Strandloper in Langebaan is a true West Coast gem. Located right on the beach, this rustic seafood restaurant offers a unique dining experience. The set-up is simple and authentic. Is there anything better than eating freshly caught fish on the braai, in the sun listening to a man sing Elvis with his guitar!
The Ultimate Fish Beach Braai – My Review
Picture rough wooden benches, long communal tables, and the sound of waves crashing just a few feet away. Guests sit in the sand, creating a relaxed, carefree vibe. The decor at Die Strandloper adds to the coastal charm. Fishing nets hang above, and old buoys, shells, and bits of driftwood complete the beachy look.
The Decor
The restaurant embraces its roots, with a no-frills atmosphere that lets the surroundings speak for themselves. Guests are handed paper plates and given a shell as a utensil—keeping things uncomplicated yet memorable. The experience is all about the food. Die Strandloper offers a ten-course fish braai that captures the essence of West Coast cooking. CLICK HERE to see more photographs of this awesome spot.
The Menu
- A delightful spread of homemade jams served with fresh bread.
- Mussels follow, grilled to perfection and drizzled with garlic butter.
- Next comes fish roe, smoky and rich in flavor.
- Then there’s the West Coast snoek, a local favorite, seasoned and cooked over an open flame.
- After that, the harders (small fish) are grilled crispy, perfect for snacking.
- A local dish called Seafood Stew brings something traditional to the table. It’s filled with rich Malay flavours.
- Line fish is then served, showcasing the fresh catch of the day.
- Lastly, crayfish on the braai which is grilled with butter.
- A hearty portion of smoor snoek, a traditional beef stew, and corn, follows.
- And finally, the feast ends with koeksisters, sweet syrupy treats with a cup of Moerkoffie laden with condensed milk.
The Experience
The open fire and simple seasoning bring out the best in each dish, offering an authentic West Coast fish braai experience.
While the food keeps coming, you can take a break and swim at the beach right there. It’s a 3 to 4-hour sitting filled with good food, laughter, and sunshine. The vibe is always laid-back, and Donny the musician walks around singing traditional songs, creating a lively atmosphere. I highly recommend you bring a good sun hat; loads of sunblock and wear shoes that you can kick off. Pack a beach bag, as you might want to swim!
Dining at Die Strandloper is like stepping back in time. There are no fancy frills, just delicious food, and the perfect beachfront setting. The casual experience, beach access, and endless seafood courses make this place a must-visit. Personally, it’s too many fish for one sitting, so remember to pace yourself. The highlight of the food was the bread and homemade Guava jam. Absolutely scrumptious.
So, if you’re looking for a traditional fish braai in Cape Town or a unique spot along the West Coast, Die Strandloper is where you need to be.
