A recent visit to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans was experienced, and I was completely blown away by the endless horizon. The vastness of the terrain was almost impossible to describe. Moreover, a deep silence was felt across the open landscape. As a travel blogger, many wild places have been explored, yet few have felt so raw and untouched. The migration of zebras was witnessed stretching across the plains in great numbers. Furthermore, time was spent with the Bushmen, and so much was learned from their ancient knowledge of the land.
Where Is Makgadikgadi Salt Pans Situated?
The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are situated in northeastern Botswana. They are located south of the Okavango Delta. Additionally, they form one of the largest salt flats in the world. The area was once a great inland lake. As a result, a wide white landscape now stretches as far as the eye can see. During the dry season, the pans appear empty and endless. Moreover, during the rainy season, life returns dramatically.
What Is a Makgadikgadi Salt Pans Safari Like?
A safari in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is very different from a classic African safari. Open space is experienced instead of thick bush. Furthermore, the sky feels larger and closer to the earth. Silence surrounds you for miles. Therefore, every sound feels important and powerful.

During the rainy season, shallow water fills parts of the pans. Flamingoes arrive in large numbers to breed and feed. Moreover, the white landscape is transformed into a sea of pink. When Is the Best Time to Visit?
The dry season, from May to October, offers clear skies and wide open views. The landscape appears dramatic and stark. Additionally, zebra migration is often seen during this period.
The rainy season, from November to April, brings water and birds. Flamingoes and other species gather in great numbers. Moreover, the pans become alive with colour and sound.
What Animals and Birds Will You See?
Several animals are seen during a safari here. Zebras are the highlight during migration season. Additionally, wildebeest and springbok are commonly spotted.
Brown hyena and bat-eared fox may also be observed. Meerkats are often seen near camps. Moreover, jackals move quietly across the plains. Birdlife is impressive, especially in the wet season. Flamingoes are the main attraction when water is present. Additionally, kori bustards are often seen walking across open land. The Northern black korhaan may be spotted in grasslands. Furthermore, the secretary bird is seen hunting on foot. The African fish eagle may be heard near seasonal waters.
The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are wild, simple, and powerful. A different side of an African safari is experienced here. Moreover, from my personal view as a travel blogger, this destination offers space, culture, and wildlife photography moments that cannot be found anywhere else near the Okavango Delta.
