The park is a haven for bird enthusiasts, with over 250 bird species. Key bird-watching spots include the Geelbek Hide and the Abrahamskraal Hide. You will see many birds of prey, eagles, hawks, and falcons.  But you will also be blown away by their birdlife in the water.  Seagulls, herons, and pelicans.  And so many more!

Wildflowers:

During the spring months (August to September), the park’s Postberg section is famous for its spectacular wildflower displays, where fields are covered in vibrant blooms. Visiting the West Coast National Park during wildflower season is a breathtaking experience, offering a vibrant display of nature’s beauty and a unique opportunity to see the region’s diverse flora in full bloom.

Wildlife:

Apart from birdlife, the park is home to many mammals such as eland, kudu, bontebok, and Cape Mountain zebra. The Postberg section is exceptional for game viewing. You will also enjoy the troops of Chacma Baboons.

Hiking and Biking Trails:

Several from easy to moderate, offering stunning views of the landscape and the lagoon. Popular trails include the Strandveld Trail and the Bakoor Trail.

Geelbek Visitor Centre:

This historical Cape Dutch building houses a restaurant and provides information about the park’s flora and fauna. It’s a good starting point for visitors. You can get so much information at this visitor center.  I highly recommend you get as much information as possible while visiting the West Coast National Park.

Kraalbaai:

A picturesque bay within the lagoon, perfect for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking. Houseboats can be rented here for a unique stay on the water.

Historic Sites:

The park contains several historical and cultural sites, including the West Coast Fossil Park nearby, which offers a glimpse into the prehistoric past of the region.

Eve’s Footprints:

Near the park, you can find an archaeological site where the oldest known footprints of a modern human, dating back approximately 117,000 years, were discovered.

Watersports:

The lagoon is popular for a variety of watersports, including kayaking, windsurfing, and sailing.

Live traditional music often accompanies the dining experience, enhancing the local flavour and ambiance. If you are looking for a fine-dining restaurant this is not the place for you! You are given a muscle shell to eat with.  The food is divine, but it’s very rustic!
