May 4, 2018

I was lucky to have spent a few hours in the zany, yet elegant beautiful Zeitz Museum.

Located in the vibrant city of Cape Town, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA). Stands as a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the African continent. Housed in a repurposed grain silo. This stunning museum has quickly become a cultural and architectural landmark that draws visitors from all corners of the globe.

The name of the museum itself pays homage to its origins. Jochen Zeitz, a German businessman and art collector who spearheaded the project, and the “Mocca” part refers to the Museum of Contemporary Art Africa.

Upon entering the building, visitors are greeted by an awe-inspiring atrium that spans over nine floors.  The architects responsible for transforming the grain silo into an art haven. Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio have ingeniously carved out various shapes and sizes. To provide a unique and dynamic space for the exhibition of contemporary art.

The museum boasts an extensive collection of works from artists across the African continent and the African diaspora. These artworks serve as a celebration of African culture, traditions, and the ongoing narrative of the continent’s people. From paintings and sculptures to installations. To multimedia pieces, Zeitz MOCAA presents a diverse range of artistic expressions that challenge, provoke, and inspire.

In addition to its permanent collection, Zeitz MOCAA also hosts rotating exhibitions, ensuring that visitors are always offered fresh and thought-provoking perspectives on contemporary African art. Nonetheless, the museum also offers educational programs, workshops, and talks that engage visitors of all ages in a deeper understanding of the art and its cultural significance.

Beyond the impressive art collection, the museum itself is a work of art. The architectural feat achieved by repurposing the grain silo. To create a breathtaking space is worthy of admiration in its own right. Hence, the innovative design allows natural light to filter through, creating unique plays of shadow and enhancing the viewing experience.

Indeed, the location of Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town further adds to its allure. Furthermore, nestled in the trendy V&A Waterfront district, the museum is surrounded by a bustling array of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Whereas visitors can easily spend an entire day immersing themselves in the world of art and culture, before exploring the vibrant streets of Cape Town.

Without a doubt, Zeitz MOCAA is a cultural gem that provides a platform for African artists to shine and share their stories with the world. By celebrating the diversity and creative potential of the continent. Let alone this museum not only transforms the perception of African art but also showcases its significance on a global stage. it is important to note, whether you are an art enthusiast, a lover of culture, or simply curious. In all honestly, a visit to Zeitz MOCAA is an experience that will leave you inspired and enlightened.

I highly recommend visiting this museum when coming to Cape Town, it is a once in a lifetime experience. You don’t necessarily have to love the art. You will leave with a sense of creative energy. And you will think about the fascinating minds of the artist.  It’s an adventure, every nook and cranny have a surprise.
