A Beautiful Day with Blitz: A Horse, my cousin and a Little Bit of Boho Magic

It’s important to note, some photoshoots are carefully planned. Others simply unfold, naturally and beautifully, when the right people, the right place and the right animal come together.

Black Horse Photoshoot

This particular shoot was one of those special days.

Without a doubt, the beautiful black horse named Blitz was brought along. Nonetheless, my very special cousin, Kischa, was ready to jump in front of the camera. Most importantly, we had a gorgeous natural setting in one of our favourite places, Greyton.

Without question, the results was a fun, loving photoshoot filled with laughter, movement and plenty of boho vibes.

Firstly, Finding the Right Spot

Our starting point was finding the right location was always going to be important.

The setting needed to feel natural. Nothing too polished. Nothing too staged. In our favourite place, Greyton, a lovely field was chosen. It was filled with character and charm. Tall grass swayed gently around us. Bullrush added texture. The natural background created the perfect setting.

There was something wonderfully simple about it. Mostly, nature had already done most of the decorating.

In the first place, as the afternoon unfolded, the field became our little photography playground. Every corner offered something different. Moreover, light filtered across the grass, movement was created naturally, and the surroundings gave the photographs that relaxed country feeling I was hoping for.

Most importantly, the setting allowed everything to feel authentic.

Secondly, The Horse

In addition, there was Blitz. What a magnificent black beauty he was!

Huge. Strong. Elegant. And absolutely gorgeous.

Standing beside him, his size could really be appreciated. He had that wonderful presence that only a horse can bring. His glossy black coat caught the light beautifully, while his gentle nature made the entire shoot so much easier.

Luckily, Blitz was super chilled.

Time was given for him to settle into the surroundings. Nothing was rushed. He was allowed to wander, stand, pose and simply be himself.

Uniquely, that made such a difference. Because he was relaxed, we were able to play around with different ideas. Rather, some moments were posed, while others happened completely naturally. Furthermore, every now and then, a little personality came through. In reality, those were often my favourite moments.

Thirdly, Capturing the Poses

Getting the poses right was all about keeping things natural.

Above all, Kischa made that part wonderfully easy. As a horse rider and genuine lover of horses, she was completely comfortable around Blitz. Albeit there was no awkwardness. No nervousness. Instead, she carried herself with style and charisma. Calm, cool and collected, she seemed completely at home beside him.

With this in mind, various poses were tried. Some were more traditional. Others were relaxed and playful. Rather than forcing a pose, movement was encouraged.

A hand on Blitz’s neck. A gentle touch. A quiet moment together.

These small interactions created the magic. The connection between Kischa and Blitz was allowed to take centre stage. As a photographer, those are the moments I love capturing most. They cannot really be manufactured. They simply happen.

And thankfully, Kischa enjoyed every minute of it.

Lastly, Having Fun

Most importantly, we had fun.

There was plenty of laughing. Plenty of giggling. And, naturally, plenty of photographs being taken! Movement was kept going throughout the shoot. Instead of standing perfectly still, Kischa was encouraged to walk, turn, interact with Blitz and simply enjoy the experience.

That created photographs that felt alive. A little wind in the hair. Additionally, grass moving beneath our feet. Blitz quietly taking everything in. Kischa laughing between shots. Those became some of the most memorable images of the day. The whole shoot carried a relaxed, earthy feel. Coupled with, the field, the horse and the natural surroundings created everything we needed.

Ultimately, this was never just a photoshoot. They are the ones where everyone is simply having fun. Finally, this day with Kischa and Blitz was exactly that.
