Soul Food: Nourishing the Body
It is a conduit for culture, tradition, and the essence of heritage. One such cuisine that encapsulates this beautiful amalgamation of food and heritage is soul food.
But you ask yourself what is soul food? I believe everyone has their own tapestry of flavours and stories that give us soul food. If I was to describe my soul food, I would say it’s warm, wholesome, and comforting. Strange way of explaining food, right? But it is just that. It’s a bowl of food that takes me back to my childhood, a place, a time of my life or somewhere I have travelled. It sparks a memory, not only the craving for the taste. That is soul food.
Without question, the foundation of soul food lies in humble ingredients. It’s not a plate of fine dining food with several elements that shock your taste buds. Its slow cooked meals that you can easily make with one pot. A pasta, a cottage pie, or a chowder. Or the best a vegetable soup, with everything and anything left in your fridge. Its that one meal, that you can eat with a spoon or a fork, hugging the bowl with pure satisfaction.
Meat also plays a prominent role in soul food. Like fried chicken or slow-cooked ribs or lamb shanks that sit for hours developing rich flavours. Becoming iconic symbols of this thing that feeds our souls.
It’s important to note, soul food is not just about the ingredients; it is about the love and care that goes into each dish. It needs to be enjoyed with family and friends. This creates a sense of connection. Many soul food recipes have been passed down from one generation to another, carrying with them the stories, laughter, and joy of family.
In today’s fast-paced and modern world, soul food serves as a reminder of the importance of honouring our roots and cherishing our traditions and heritage. It also teaches us the value of simple ingredients. The power of food to nourish not only our bodies but also our spirits.
So, the next time you gather around the table, share a meal, and savour the flavours of food. Its time to learn to embrace the stories and traditions that have been woven into each dish. Keeping our history alive!
And most importantly, allow food to nourish not only our bodies but also our souls.
