Without a question, being on safari is one of my top experiences EVER! And I adore and love photography.  Luckily, I have a day job, as both of those activities are expensive.  Therefore, I think I have real firsthand experiences of making sure you are ready to rock and roll with your camera on Safari.  I have made a million mistakes and urge you to remember to put the camera away and enjoy your sighting.  Or else you will be a robot throughout such a humbling experience. Worrying about ISO, aperture and composition!

Here are my tips to get the best photographic experience on Safari:

Gear Essentials:

• Before embarking on your safari adventure, it’s crucial to ensure you have the right gear.
• A high-quality camera with a versatile zoom lens is essential for capturing both close-up shots of wildlife and expansive landscapes.
• Additionally, a sturdy tripod can be invaluable for stabilizing your camera during long shots or capturing the vibrant hues of the African sunset.
• Make sure you have 6 fully charged batteries at all times no matter what. We came across a Female Leopard and her teeny-weeny baby. the affection and love between the two would have won me awards.  But my battery was flat and my 2 standbys’ where no on me. Rookie mistake.
• Carry your camera, lens and all your gear safely, it’s very dusty and during all the excitement.  You can find yourself being quite hard on your gear.
• SD cards, oh my word, I cannot stress this enough. When you are in the bush you take many photographs, especially to get that perfect shot. So, you need at least 6 SD Drives, making sure you have enough space to really play.

Timing is Everything:

The success of safari photography often hinges on being at the right place at the right time. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best lighting conditions, known as the golden hours. When the sun casts a warm glow over the landscape. This is when wildlife is most active. Giving you many optimal opportunities to capture animals in their natural habitats.

Wildlife Photography:

African safaris are renowned for their diverse wildlife, from the iconic “Big Five” – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros – to the myriad of other fascinating species. Patience is key when photographing wildlife, as it may take time to spot and observe animals in their natural behaviors. The use of a telephoto lens allows you to capture intimate moments without disturbing the subjects.

Landscape Photography:

Of course, beyond the incredible wildlife, Africa’s landscapes are equally captivating. Vast savannas, dense jungles, and expansive deserts offer a diverse canvas for photographers. Another key point, use your wide-angle lenses to capture the sweeping panoramas and emphasize the grandeur of the scenery. Don’t forget to experiment with different compositions and focal points to add depth to your landscape shots.
