Grootbos Garden Lodge

Grootbos Garden Lodge

Grootbos Garden Lodge is a hidden gem.

Nestled high on a hillside. Overlooking the majestic Walker Bay. Part of the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. It is just two hours from Cape Town. Yet it feels like a world apart.

Firstly, the location is breathtaking. Lush fynbos stretches across 2,500 hectares. Ancient milkwood trees add a sense of calm. To the south lies sparkling Walker Bay. Here, the Marine Big Five – whales, sharks, dolphins, penguins, and seals – come alive. Moreover, nearby Hermanus is famous for cliff-side whale watching.

Next, the setting is peaceful.

The main lodge blends stone, timber, and thatch. Inside, a bar, dining area, lounge, spa, and heated pool await. There is also a children’s playroom and petting zoo. Toddlers will love ducks, rabbits, and fun crafts.

Then, the suites impress. Eleven freestanding luxury suites are hidden among the forest. Each has a private deck. Several even feature outdoor showers. Inside, underfloor heating, separate lounges with fireplaces, and ocean views come as standard. The decor is contemporary and warm. Natural fabrics echo the surrounding landscape.

Furthermore, activities are endless. Guests can wander through milkwood forests and colourful fynbos. A guided botanical safari reveals over 800 plant species. Wildlife lovers can spot antelopes, baboons, honey badgers, and caracals.

On the water, marine safaris promise encounters with the Marine Big Five. Whales swim right to the boat. Penguins and dolphins often make an appearance. For thrill-seekers, shark cage diving near Gansbaai is an option.

Additionally, you can ride horses through fynbos and along the beach. Or hike coastal cliffs and visit Klipgat Cave, home to ancient hunter-gatherers. As a bonus, scenic flights offer sweeping aerial views.

In the evenings, sit on the deck with a glass of local wine. Watch the sunset stain the bay in orange and pink hues. Gather around the boma. Dinner under the stars feels magical

Also, sustainability is key. Grootbos follows eco-friendly practices. Most meals use produce from its garden. Composting, solar power, and organic toiletries are standard. The Grootbos Foundation trains local staff in hospitality and conservation

In short, Grootbos Garden Lodge offers a blend of luxury, nature, and discovery. It is perfect for families, couples, or anyone seeking calm. It invites you to explore, unwind, and reconnect with the Cape’s unique beauty.
